Yes, clearly I am way too retarded to design a website for anyone. If any of my fabulously clever LJ friends could give me some advice on this I would muchly appreciate it.

ETA: I made it work. I really am a fucktard sometimes.

Web Hosting?

  • Jun. 26th, 2009 at 6:45 PM
kitten
Yet another computer / web related post - might actually do a proper update one day - aaaaaaaaaanyways...

I have been thinking for a while that I should probably make a nice little portfolio of all my web stuff, and stop stealing webspace from a university I don't go to any more(!). Also, for the paid project I'm doing at the moment, I'm using Drupal to design it, so it will be a bit more complex than the little sites I've got on my webspace at the moment.

Yes, so I think I should actually get some proper web hosting of my very own - but where to go? I've just had a look on Google for hosting companies and felt a little overwhelmed, so was wondering if any of my fabulous techy lj friends have any recommendations for me?

On a related note, if there's anyone who has any Drupal-related tips, that would be totally awesome. I've used it at my placement and it seemed really simple - but of course that was using it on a site that's up and running already. Actually getting everything to work in the first place seems to be a lot more difficult!

*sigh* I will never be a proper geek... :)

Dreamweaver...?

I'm applying for a job that says you need to be able to use Dreamweaver... I have never used it, but am I correct in assuming that it's just like a HTML editor type thing?

Is it difficult to learn how to use it, and would it be a big deal that I haven't used it, seeing as I normally just write all my code by hand?

Questions, questions!

Virtual Lives?

  • Jan. 27th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
kitten
For part of my course I am looking at Virtual Communities, and after doing some research I've become quite interested in how interactions in virtual worlds impact on people in real life - as well as more general topics such as why people decide to become part of virtual communities online, and how they work - e.g. politics, economy etc.

I am mostly looking at communities like Second Life, World of Warcraft and Sociolotron, for example, and would be really interested to hear from anyone who has first hand experiences of being part of such a community:

- Why did you join in the first place?
- Are you still part of the community? (if not why not?)
- Do you think virtual life can take over real life?
- How do the virtual politics work (law and order, crime and punishment?)
- Have you ever been a victim of a virtual crime?
- Is there a way to make real money virtually?
- Are there any other benefits to you as a real person in being involved in a virtual community?

I'm also looking at social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo etc, with regards to how people's treatment of you online influences your feelings towards them in the real world. Some of the questions above also apply, but also:

- How insulted are you if someone 'defriends' you (even if they're someone you never talk to)?
- Do you think social networking sites are better for keeping in touch with people you know or for meeting people you don't know - why did you join?
- Is there an etiquette to be observed with regards to changing your relationship status? How does this affect your relationships in the real world, if at all?

Plus any other experiences you'd like to share would be really useful.

I've made this post public and put anonymous posting on (or rather, I will when I figure out how to EDIT: can someone *please* let me know how to do this on this entry without changing the settings for my entire journal - I am being a dumb blonde!) - if you'd rather send me a message than post on my LJ then that's cool too. Thanks for any help you can give me, will be muchly appreciated!

Backing Up LJ

Probably old news to most people on my Friends List, but just in case it's not...

It would seem that the company that owns LJ might be going the same way as Woolworths et al.

If this information is even more new to you than it is to me, you might want to back up your LJ - CLICK HERE and download the file 'ljArchive-0.9.7.exe' (Thank you Dene!). Run the program and follow the instructions - it's uber simple and only takes a couple of minutes to backup your entire LJ plus comments.

It's also a great procrastination device - I have been fondly looking back at entries from 2003 - aww!

computer advice needed

kitten
i am thinking of getting me this new toy - for djing as well as normal computery stuff for uni etc.

just wondering really - is there anything wrong with it? as far as me and chris can see (after internet-based research) it doesn't seem too bad specs-wise but wondering if there's anything we've missed, or also if anyone has experience with a sempron 3100+ or advent laptops.

please help!

ps: i don't *just* want it because it's pink, although obviously that is a factor. i am fully aware that being pink does not mean it is a good laptop (i have seen many crap pink laptops on t'interweb today).

pps: please don't take the above to mean i've only been searching for pink laptops, i just wanted a basis for comparison.

hugely much with the meh. really not thinking i'm gonna get great marks for this, should just have stuck with writing a goddamn essay.

argh.

anyhoo. i have a slight ie problem. the background colour of my puter is (surprisingly enough) set to pink. this means that some sites in ie randomly seem to have pink backgrounds. this includes mine. which is odd, because i've specified everywhere that the background colour should be white, and it works fine in firefox.

anyone got any ideas?

please take pity on a poor stressed out shrew :(.

new improved happy shrew!

today i play the game of being a happy shrew. been miserable for about a week now for one reason or another and i'm really quite bored of being grumpy all the time when i really have a lot of things to be happy about: i have a wonderful boyfriend, some fabulous friends, i'm doing a course i really enjoy, my job doesn't suck that much and at least it pays quite well for what it is...etc. so really, i have no reason to be miserable.

my mummy and daddy and possibly my small (but bigger than me) sister are coming in a bit to take me for lunch. i haven't eaten yet today so i can be a piglet :). then i shall go to the library and get my hittites and mycenaeans hats on. i have been neglecting my studying of late, and that will not do if i'm wanting distinctionness!

hehe...i got a book yesterday from amazon about linear b. it is by jt hooker. that made me giggle!

tomorrow kryogenix beckons, hooray! a few people are coming to my house for drinkage beforehand, if you fancy joining us please let me know :).

*ubersparklehappy vibes*

is there any way that you can put pictures into your text in Word 2003 without it throwing a tantrum and saying 'no - don't put it there, put it where i want it - at the edge of the page where it won't get printed'?

alternatively is there another program i could use that will make this work?

or failing that, how do i get Word 97 back? ok so it didn't like pictures either, but at least after a short squabble it generally did what it was told.

i tried using 'help' but it just opened up a window in *fucking internet explorer* to tell me to do things i'd already done!

big. sack. of. wank.

please help me!

i'm doing a debatey presentationy thing for my german oral, and the topic is "is religion relevant to the youth of today?" i am taking the 'no' point of view, and was wondering if anyone could help me by giving me any useful arguments/opinions on the matter? (please :)!) just so you know, helping me won't be cheating as i'll need to translate everything into german anyway, and this module doesn't count towards my credits - i just need to pass.

all opinions welcome (including 'yes' opinions - it might be useful to know what i could be arguing against!).

*hugs* to anyone who helps me!

thanks muchly xx

just wondering if anyone has a copy of powerpoint 2003 i could borrow?

and also if anyone knows of/has good image manipulation software - for my archaeological illustration project i'm going to do digital photography and do...things...to the photos...but i'm not sure what yet, as i don't really know what computers could do, and not really sure what the focus of the project is going to be as yet - just thought it would be quite fun and interesting to do, and might end up looking really good.

anyhoo, if anyone can help in the above matters, please let me know.

fish? FISH?!

i am greatly irked by boots. i found a piece of tuna fish and a bone in my supposedly vegemanarian pasta salad yesterday. *shudders* thinking about it now makes me feel quite sick. i have just written them a very formal very angry letter, so they damn well better send me some free shit - although to be honest i doubt very much i'll be getting any food from there in the near future. this is irksome in itself as they are the only place on campus that does decent vegemanarian food that isn't pizza and chips (unless you're willing to pay a small fortune for a big meal). ah well, i suppose making packed lunchness will save me moneys. but yes, vegemanarians beware!

in happier news, me and chris saw soulwax/2manydjs last night. fooking wikkid. the djs were awesome, doing some pounding mixes of some classic choons, and it was really cool that soulwax played a set as a band as well. i used to like the bandness of soulwax many years ago before the 2manydjs malarkey, so twas fabulous to see them live. highlights included playing the bass with the use of an electric drill, a guitarist with the best comedy moustache i've ever seen and the most amazing cover version of benny benassi's satisfaction. awesomeness! the only bad thing was that it ended up going on later than we thought, and had to leave before 2manydjs finished, it being a school night and chris needing to get up early for workness. had such a cool night though, i want to see them again soon! i really like stealth as a venue as well, must go to more club nights there methinks. ooh, and i was way too excited by the discovery of the magic portal between stealth and the rescue rooms :D.

today, i will be mainly sorting out cdness for tonight's djing fun. i'm quite excited about it, and a bit less nervous after looking through my music collection and working out what kinda stuff i can realistically play, it being both rock and mainstreamy, and realising that i can easily fill two half hour sets. i still have butterflies though.

i might have a german lesson later, i don't know whether to be too optimistic though. i went all the way to campus yesterday and the bloody teacher didn't turn up. this was very irksome, but hopefully she'll bother today. i know that if i don't go she'll probably turn up and i'll get in trouble so i'd better go really!
